For two weeks in August, this celebration of arts and culture takes place, offering a rich potpourri of 66 workshops in the visual arts, dance, music, crafts, theater arts, and fiber arts.

1. Apple Basket

Students will make a 12 inch apple basket using prepared reed materials and traditional woven basket techniques. Ages 12-adult.

3. Bead Weaving: Free Form Techniques

This class explores 3 traditional beading techniques in very non-traditional ways. The results are endless and truly amazing. A genuinely fun way to "play" with beads. Ages 14-adult.

4. Bead Weaving: Herringbone Stitch Bracelet

Also knows as "Ndebele," this ancient African stitch uses needle, thread, seed beads and larger beads for embellishment. This strikingly beautiful bracelet is an easy, relaxing way to learn this technique. Ages 14-adult.

5. Bead weaving: Peyote Stitch Bracelet Cuff

In this beginner level class, students will create an exquisite cuff using needle, thread and seed beads. Quite easy with elegant results. Finishing off techniques and embellishment ideas will also be covered. Ages 14-adult.

6. Casual Cool Kitemaking

7. Clay Sea Creatures

Come hear a story about the ocean that will inspire you and your little ones to sculpt sea creatures to populate your own underwater world. Clay creatures will be fired after drying and displayed in the final showcase. Ages 4-adult.

8. Clay Wind Chimes

Each participant will create a windchime/mobile by combining clay pieces with driftwood and other found objects. All ages.

9. Cut and Pierced Lampshade Crafting

Learn the craft of cutting and piercing a design on lampshade paper and making a lampshade by attaching to frames and then trimming with ribbon. The finished shade will be approximately 12" across the bottom diameter. Ages 16-adult.

10. Elegant Hats and High Tea

12. Introduction to Precious Metal Clay

You'll learn basic techniques needed to make at least two unique pieces of fine silver jewelry with step-by-step instructions and demonstrations. 13. Jewelry Making With Wire Wrapping

We will learn spirals and coils and make our own jump rings, clasps, findings and all the things that a good wire wrapper needs to know about. Bead chains, earrings and wrapping a cabochon stone or nugget are among the projects that we will work on. Ages 10-adult.

14. Raku Workshop

In this 2 day workshop, you will have an opportunity to experience Raku firing first-hand. Raku is a method of firing pottery that began in Japan 300 years ago. In Raku firing, we fire pots fast, then remove them from the kiln and place them in some combustible material. This results in a wide variety of colors - no two are ever alike. Ages Adult (you know if you're old enough to play with fire).

15. Scarecrows

Come and create your own original scarecrow or bird friendly garden friend. He or she may have a head made of a lobster buoy and be decorated with fanciful found objects. Let your imagination go wild with these recycled materials sculptures. Ages all ages (under age 6 bring an adult).

16. Dichroic Glass - Setting In Precious Metal Clay

Combine Glass Fusing and Precious Metal Clay and learn how to set fused glass in Precious Metal Clay. The fused glass can be one made during the Dichroic Glass Fusing class or there will be pieces available for purchase during class. You will be able to take your piece of fine silver jewelry home with you at the end of class. Ages 15-adult.

17. Twig Furniture: Small table or chair

Participants build a sturdy small table or chair using green twigs (1/2" - 2" diameter) and ringed neck nail construction. Driftwood, stone or found objects can be incorporated in the design. Teens-adults.

18. Wind Sculptures

Wind sculptures, like weather vanes, are outdoor artforms that also tell us which way the wind blows. This workshop will teach you why they work and how to make one. In the course of the workshop you will paint and assemble a two foot long wind fish that will pivot to indicate the direction of the wind and provide delight for seasons to come. Ages 10-adult.

Throughout civilization gourds have been used as natural vessels for utilitarian purposes, musical instruments, toys and dolls. In this class we will explore the options that gourds offer and craft a vessel in our individual and unique style. Ages 14-adult.

22. Beginning Jazz*

Salsa is the Spanish word for sauce. This spicy Cuban dance is flirtatious and sensuous. Salsa is similar to Mambo, with turns becoming an important feature. All ages.

28. Sky Dying

Learn basic dyeing techniques by recreating your favorite sky in wool. Use synthetic dyes to make a wool sky you can use in a rug hooking or fiber art project. Bring a sky photo, all other materials provided. Ages 14 and up.

31. Indigo Magic

We'll learn the cultivation of Polygonum Tinctorium (Japanese Indigo) and use it fresh to make a magnificent, colorfast, and safe blue dye. We will harvest the indigo, use it to dye several different fibers, and batik and dye a cotton square to bring home. Ages 10-adult.

36. Carve And Paint A Shorebird Or A Trout

37. Fish Print

Using the patterns we find on fish and the texture of their scales as inspiration this class will provide a brief introduction to mono printing, relief printing and serigraphy. Participants will explore mark making through wood blocks, lino cuts, and photo silkscreens. Ages 12-adult.

38. The Art of Lobster Cuisine

The Maine Lobster has long played a role in Maine cuisine and recipes "boil lobsters to eat cold the common way" appeared in 1664. 45. Making Japanese Sushi Roll

HONORING THE NATIVE CULTURE OF MAINE

46. Burned Out Bowls

By placing a coal on a block of cedar wood and then blowing on the coal by use of a straw made of water grass you will hollow a bowl and a spoon. This is much the same way as indigenous people made dug out canoes. We will make our own tongs to handle the coals, by making cordage from inner basswood bark and saplings. Ages 14-adult.

47. Dream Catchers

Each participant will make his or her own hoop and weave a spider's web. Add a wooden bead and a feather to catch your dreams. The web catches your good dreams and the feather transfers them into your sub-consciousness. Ages 10-adult.

48. Fish spear

Carve your wooden fish spear by splitting a straight shaft and carving two barbs from the halves created by the split. These barbs will hold the fish if executed with skill and accuracy. Using deer hide you will secure a wooden wedge to create a spacer for the split. Ages 14-adult.

49. Traditional Penobscot Birch Bark Baskets

Choose to make either a food storage bucket or fold-up water container. The traditional use for a bucket is to store dried foods. This vessel will have a cedar rim and will be laced together with spruce root. Birch Bark Bowls are intended to hold and boil water. Ages 14-adult.

64. Oil Painting: Getting the Most with a Limited Palette

This oil painting class will focus on using a limited palette of colors to create strong paintings. Through a combination of demonstration and practice students will learn color mixing, effective value choices, strong compositions, good start strategies, fluid brush work and when it's time to say "It's done." This class will increase your sense of ease and confidence when you paint, whether you are a beginner or have been painting for years. Ages 14-adult.

65. Writing Dynamic Dialogue

Dialogue must move a story, raise questions, and create tension. This workshop will be an exploration of what makes good dialogue through short writing exercises, discussion, and supportive and honest critique. Because dialogue is the heart and soul of good writing and the bane of bad, we will spend the day intensively examining all its aspects. This workshop will explore the art of story telling with children and their parents, grandparents or older sibling. We will orally tell each other stories, talk about what a story needs to be effective, and write some of them down. Then we will rework them until we are happy with the results. There will be an opportunity to read stories at the final performance. Ages 6-adult.
